Rajni Pathre Razdan is not only a dedicated teacher of Hindi literature, she is a committed writer too. She is a multi-faceted genius and has written songs, ghazals, poems, stories and so on. But her main forte is the short story, where she packs the most powerful punch. Her stories cover a wide range of subjects regarding the human condition with all its problems, tragedies and concerns. Bol Meri Machhli Kitna Paani is a collection of short stories, in which some of her best pieces have been brought together.
One major area of interest for Rajni is the pain of the diasporas, the refugees, the dispossessed, the exiled, the ones separated from their soil. For paddy (dhaan) and woman (dhanya), the tragedy of transplantation in order to increase soil fertility and crop yield is age old. In Rajni's stories, there is the double tragedy of the woman and the refugee.
Heemaal, Resham ka Keeda, Dejharu, Meen Pyasi etc. describe the pain of women trying to be both ideal housewives and ideal employees. In most stories, there are people standing perplexed at the crossroads, not knowing what to do. This is true of Kanta in Anuttarit Uttar, Rama of Vachan, Tara of Manini Kare Guhaar and Sundara of Timepass.
Rajni's stories reflect the tense reality of the social milieu in which she lives. (Courtesy: Malti Sharma in Koshur Samachar, Feb 2002)
