Braj Kumar Nehru
Pt. Braj Kumar Nehru was a member of the illustrious Nehru family. His grandfather Pt. Nand Lal Nehru was the elder brother of Pt. Moti Lal Nehru, and remained Diwan of Khetri State for 11 years. His father Pt Braj Lal Nehru was a senior officer of the Audit and Accounts Service. After his retirement, Maharaja Hari Singh appointed him Finance Minister of J&K.
Pt Braj Kumar Nehru was born to Braj Lal and Rameshwari Nehru on 4th September 1909 at Anand Bhavan, Allahabad. He received his early education at Allahabad. After his graduation in science, he went to the London School of Economics for a degree in Economics and to Balliol College for Bar- at -Law. In 1934, he joined the ICS.
After the usual postings in the civil service, Braj Kumar was appointed in 1949 as Economic Minister in the Indian Embassy at Washington and concurrently as the Indian Director of the World Bank. In 1957, he became the Secretary, Economic Affairs in the Central Government. He was appointed India’s Ambassador to the US in 1961.
He later held the positions of Governor, Assam and Nagaland (1968-73), High Commissioner of India in U.K.(1973-77), Governor of J&K (1981-84) and Governor of Gujarat(1984-86).
He was a gifted writer and wrote many books, of which Thoughts on Our Present Discontent (1986) and Nice Guys Finish Second (1997) are famous.
He was decorated with the Padma Vibhushan in 1999.
Braj Kumar married a Hungarian ,Magdalena Friedman, who assumed the Indian name of Shobha. They had three sons--- Ashok, Aditya and Anil.
Towards the later part of his life, he stayed at Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh and spent his time reading and writing. He died on 31st October 2001.
