Pran Kishore is a versatile personality who was one of the central figures of the cultural renaissance that took place in Kashmir after the dawn of Indian independence, and who has left an indelible stamp on Kashmiri theatre, literature, broadcasting, television and cinema.
Starting his career as a student secretary of the dramatic clubs of S.P. College and Amar Singh College, Kishore was inspired to set up a branch of IPTA in Kashmir by K.A.Abbas and Balraj Sahni. This became the nucleus of the National Cultural Front. Kishore headed the drama wing of the Front. The Front gave birth to the Cultural Congress and then to Cultural Conference, with Kishore remaining associated with each of these.
Kishore and Mohan Lal Aima jointly directed two plays: Kashmir Yeh Hai and Shahid Sherwani. Then Kishore produced a two-hour shadow play Naye Kashmir Ki Raah Par. They produced Nadim’s opera Bombur Yemberzal, the songs of which became extremely popular, especially the Bombro Bombro number. This opera was also shown to Khrushchev and Bulganin on the massive stage of Nedou’s Hotel. Later, Kishore directed Diwane ke Khwab written by A.M. Lone.
During his long association with Radio Kashmir, Kishore produced over 2000 radio plays and features in Urdu, Hindi and Kashmiri, writing many of them himself. He also produced plays and features for the national programmes. He brought Kashmiri drama to the national scene and Kashmiri radio documentary to the international scene. His radio documentary Aab Ta Hayat was the Indian entry in the prestigious international festival Prix Italia and the Asian Broadcasting Union festival.
He was a pioneer in broadcasting serials. His Ta Vyath Rooz Pakan, Lala Jo and Sons and Vaital Pachisi were widely acclaimed.
He has written some landmark serials such as Gul Gulshan Gulfam ( 45 episodes), Junoon (600 episodes), Saye Deodar Ke (21 episodes), Ghutan (52 episodes), Manzil (52 episodes) and Noorjahan. Eight other serials are under production. He also wrote three tele-films Mashaal, Patjhar and Baghi.
Kishore was the co-director of the first Kashmiri feature film Maanzraat and director of the Kashmiri version of Shair-e-Kashmir Mehjoor.
Thus with a career spanning over five decades, Pran Kishore continues to dominate the world of Kashmiri performing arts.
