Chaman Lal Bhat
Dr. Chaman Lal Bhat, a distinguished scientist of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, was born in Srinagar in 1949. After obtaining his MSc. Physics from Kashmir University, he started his career at BARC, Gulmarg in 1971.
During his post-doctoral sojourn at the University of Durham, U.K.(1984-85), he got involved in the study of gamma ray data base from SAS II and COS B satellites and published a large number of scientific papers on the origin of cosmic rays in our galaxy.
After his return, he developed and installed the first Gamma Ray Telescope at Gulmarg. This detected a number of gamma ray sources from 1985 to 1989.
From 1990 onwards, Dr. Bhat devoted his full time on the conceptualization and development of GRACE Project at Mt. Abu. The first phase of this Gamma Ray Telescope was installed at Gauri Shanker, Mt. Abu in 1997 and is being constantly updated since.
Dr. Bhat was a leading gamma ray astronomer of India. He was a great experimentalist who took pride in using his innovative ideas in developing indigenous equipment required for his research.
Dr. Bhat passed away on 17th December 2001 in a tragic road accident near Mt. Abu, at the early age of 52 years.
