| Rameshwar Nath Kao |
Born in 1918, Rameshwar Nath Kao, Ramji to friends, joined the Indian Police in 1940 and was allotted the UP cadre. He came away to the Intelligence Bureau just before 1947.
In 1956, he was deputed to investigate the crash of the aircraft ‘ Kashmir Princess’ just before the Bandung Conference.
In 1963, he took over as the founding Director of the Air Research Centre. Five years later, he formed the Research and Analysis Wing, better known as RAW.
With the unrest in East Pakistan and the 1971 war came his finest hour. RAW and Directorate General of Security played stellar roles in the affair, which led to the dismemberment of Pakistan.
In 1980, he came back as Special Adviser to the Cabinet, overseeing both IB and RAW, and coming closest to the position of intelligence czar. He was the first to float the idea of a special security unit for the Prime Minister.
Rameshwar Nath got on famously with colleagues of other services. He never threw rank or his powerful connections at them. Those who worked with him remember him for his kindness and generosity.
Pt. R.N.Kao passed away in the early hours of 20th Jan 2002.
